Six O’Clock Sky

Knowers

They saw him lay
In simple straw
Just born that day
A day so raw
With love and joy
And prophet’s sight
This baby boy
This star-filled night.
With shepherds come afar
Who could have sworn the stars
Were fluttering with wings
And trumpets, while they sing
Gloria to a world who looked near and far
For a promise of more than what mortals are.

A mother meek
A dad so sure
A journey’s week
And where they were
No palace shine
No servants nigh
For one divine
To come hereby.
His birth would realign
This world and personkind
And what we ever knew
Of earth and self—and who
Could tell what else we’d soon re-know
What wonders his great life would show.

And so they praised among the sheep
While pondering with the world asleep
What more would happen by and by
What kind of mark he’d leave and why
But still for all they didn’t know
This night with its prophetic glow
Found her and him and field hands
Awash in love, a grateful band.

Then with the sun
They all were gone
They took their son
And travelled on
God made their route
To Egypt where
Despite its roots
They’d be safe there.
The shepherds and their charge
Had thoughts and sight enlarged
Their daily lives were changed
Perspectives rearranged
The first earth hearts to feel the touch
Of one who soon would change so much.
